Jill Scott is the only child of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Scott was raised by her grandmother as an all-only daughter by her grandmother. Scott graduated from her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education as well as working two other positions. She wanted to be the high school's English teacher. The dream of becoming an English teacher in high school was shattered when she quit school. She started her career as a spoken-word artist, performing her own work in live poetry readings. She eventually linked up to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. They were able to collaborate in writing You Got Me. The singer was initially spotted as an artiste at a Roots Show. After that, she got collaborations which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She also gained knowledge of the stage when she was a part of the Canada tour of the Broadway production Rent. She was signed by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
